EU Considers Jail Time For Worst Polluters Print E-mail

Polluting industries in Europe take note -- EU officials aren't messing around anymore. Finding the maximum fine of €375,000 insufficient to deter illegal dumping activities, the EU is looking to impose criminal sanctions (aka jail time) for offenders.

Right now only some member nations have opted to send those found responsible for allowing damage to air, water, plants, animals and people to jail, leaving a patchwork of regulations that allow companies to do a cost-benefit analysis of where it's worth polluting. Incarceration times would be left up to each nation.

In the US, states are having a hard enough time paying for the record number of people behind bars. Considering how many companies flout environmental regulations, the US incarceration rate would probably jump to 1 in 50 Americans behind bars if we followed the EU's lead. But, we think this is just the sort of incentive companies need to clean up their acts ... or start buying soap on a rope.

Listen, as a european, I'd love to see this passed. But it won't happen.

Why? Because most the European Commission is in the pocket of big business, and you can bet these guys will never pass such a law.

Even if they did, you can be certain that most big companies would find a loophole to avoid sending the CEO to jail.

And don't even get me started on situation such as the one in Italy, where a enormous amount of pollution is due to Mafia-controlled illegal trash dumps. In that case, sending someone to jail is simply impossible.

So, yeah, great idea. Not a snow ball chance in hell of happening, though.

As weird as this may sound, your comment is actually a relief...I would hate to think that businesses can only buy their way out of jail in the US!

Hi, We're EnviroWonk

Yeah, OK, we can be the change that we want to see in the world. But unless powerful people in powerful positions want to be that change as well, nothing's going to change.

So now, finally, there's a place where you can go for news and analysis of politics from an environmental perspective.
