Someone should have the UNEP PR team talk to Humana, because this company knows how to get some attention. The health care provider is teaming up with the cycling advocate group Bikes Belong, and the bike-sharing program Freewheelin, to provide 1,000 bikes at the Democratic convention in Denver and the Republican one in St. Paul this summer. Organizers will leave 70 bikes in each city when the conventions end, lest residents think the whole thing is just a marketing ploy. With both presidential candidates in favor of emissions-reduction legislation, you can be sure that riding one of these bikes will be the perfect photo-op for any lawmaker looking to prove their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. (As you can see, Obama got a head start on the biking photo-ops over the weekend.) At the very least, the convention bike-sharing program will be another opportunity for activists to stage a Critical Mass ride at the GOP convention, for those who didn't have the opportunity to be arrested in 2004. The idea is reminiscent of the bicycles made available to the visiting delegates during the UN talks on climate change in Bali last year. We'll know its a trend when we see Congresspeople traversing their urban districts on bikes rather than roomy Cadillacs.

Yeah, OK, we can be the change that we want to see in the world. But unless powerful people in powerful positions want to be that change as well, nothing's going to change.
So now, finally, there's a place where you can go for news and analysis of politics from an environmental perspective.
