Hey, something conclusive-ish came out of the G8 talks today! The nations agreed to reduce their emissions 50 percent by 2050. But before you break out the champagne and noise makers, let's take a look at what they didn't agree to:

• Whether those reductions would be from 1990 or current emission levels.
• Setting a near-term goal, like reducing emissions 20 percent by 2020.
• Making the 2050 emissions goal binding.

So if President Bush didn't have his fingers crossed behind his back, the US still has no real mandate to reduce its emission. Yeah, China is so not going to get on board with that.

But, if the European Commission finds reason to be optimistic about today's deal, then we should stop being such a Debbie Downer. The President of the EC saw this as the opening salvo for real, binding promises to come out of next year's climate change talks in Copenhagen.

There had been concern that with the atmospheric rise in energy and food prices, not to mention all that unfortunate craziness going on in Zimbabwe, that climate change would not receive significant discussion time at the summit, which ends tomorrow. Fortunately (?) climate has dominated the talks, if not the press coverage.
