In April, we told you about the Washington Nationals' shiny new LEED-certified stadium, complete with a photo diary from the opening game. We finished off our story with a picture of the ExxonMobil sign on the stadium's left field wall, and apparently we weren't the only ones who saw the irony.

This week, the New York Times reported how environmentalists have continually been critical of the oil giant's sponsorship of the team. The article reports that the team approached ExxonMobil about sponsorship and conveyed environmentalists' common gripes about the company's greenwashing activities.

"It's perfect politics," activist Mike Tidwell told the Times. "They get to associate their name with the goodness of baseball and environmental generosity."

It just sounds like another case of business as usual in our nation’s capital.
