| The Stimulus: What's In It For Enviros? |

As the merits of the stimulus bill are debated on cable news, talk radio programs, and in D.C. bars, we wanted to take a moment and highlight some of the more intriguing environmental initiatives that are included in the bill. One of the big hitters we’re excited about adds $6 billion to weatherize the homes of lower income Americans. While John Boehner may not be convinced this program will create jobs, it's hard for us to figure out just how those homes would weatherize themselves. Last time we checked, caulk, new windows, and extra insulation need to be sold, delivered, and installed by people. We're especially excited about the $4.5 billion to weatherize and retrofit federal buildings across the country. The Federal Government is the largest consumer of electricity in the country and whereas we, the taxpayer, foot the bills, we're excited that our leaders are setting us up for reduced expenditures in the near future. Of course, while $70 billion for green energy jobs is awesome, we're a bit disappointed that a large scale initiative to modernize America’s aging electricity grid isn't as robust as it could be. Our system still lags far behind the rest of the modernized world, but our government's been busy fighting wars and helping corporations globalize the earth, so it's exciting that we’ve started at least. Some "smaller" programs we're excited about include $650 million for the Forest Service to repair and decommission its vast infrastructure of roads and bridges, $1.5 billion for the National Park Service, the BLM, and the Forest Service to help with infrastructure improvement and public safety issues - some of which may be used to clean up the thousands of toxic abandoned mine sites scattered across the West. Doubtless $6 billion to clean up contaminated Defense Department sites will put folks to work quickly, as will $1.2 billion for the EPA’s clean-up programs. We'll continue to keep an eye on the way this funding is spent. Let's hope the bill succeeds in both getting folks back to work and in cleaning up some of America’s most polluted places.
